Digestion
Digestion is the process in which food is broken up physically and chemically to get absorbed into the body. This is necessary because it later gives the body energy. Nutrients from the food are transported through the esophagus to the stomach, where food is broken down even more. Then the body absorbes sugar, protein, vitamins etc. from the food in the small and large intestines (diffusion of glucose- movement from high to low). These essential nutrients spread throughout the body, to store for energy. Then cellular respiration occurs, cells use glucose to make ATP (3 phosphates that break one bond to let go energy).

Tasmanian Devil:
As shown in the slideshow below, Tasmanian devils are carnivores. They obtain food by shredding their food with their sharp set of canines (4), then chew with their molars (4). Their process of digestion is the same as ours, since they are mammals as well. The food is broken down mechanically by chewing and chemically by saliva, which is a type of acid. After the food is broken down in the mouth, it then travels down the esophagus to the stomach to break up even more. The food is stomach churns and dissolves food to break down the proteins.
